Family therapy is a form of counseling which concentrates in treating family relationships and attachments/bonds. A licensed marriage and family therapist can work with individual members, as well as every combination of family relationship; couples, parents and children, siblings, grandparents, or the whole family. These sessions are dedicated to identify the actual resources every family member has and their unique way of interacting so that their existing strengths can materialize and the conflicts can be resolved.
As families approach these stages, some families as a whole or its members, face important challenges which sometimes can become stressful, and they are severe enough to develop certain symptoms such as anxiety, sleep problems, somatic complaints, depression, irritability, panic attacks, sexual difficulties, infidelity, domestic violence, divorce, separations, substance abuse, weight gain or loss, loss of hope, etc.
I have over thirty years of experience in working initially with children and their families and later, providing individual, couple, family and, group therapy. Many years of relevant experience consulting with Educational Facilities, Corporations and Organizations on personal and professional development. Bilingual with multicultural perspective and facility for intercultural communication.
Extensive experience in providing children, individual, family, marriage and group therapy, serving as a community resource for government agencies and community groups. Experience as supervisor, workshop coordinator, international speaker and consultant, television consultant, television guest speaker, radio guest speaker, and school and University teacher. Practice with cancer patients and their families, grieving, children with academic problems, career orientation, assessing individual’s needs, and diagnosing patients.
I work with my patients to fully understand the issues that they want to work with and to develop a treatment strategy that addresses the problem in the most effective way possible. Respectful and sensitive to cultural differences, I am fully bilingual in both English and Spanish and have experience living and practicing in South America and the U.S. My aim is to guide my patients to have a better understanding of their circumstances, in many cases pierced by the immigrant experience.
